The ever growing project

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve talked about the progress on the house, but believe you me… its going. At this point all the wallpaper is removed and even some of the plaster/render part of the walls too. A contractor we hired has knocked down a wall between the dining room and the kitchen and I’m prepping a room to be turned into a bathroom. Did I mention we were going to turn a room into a bathroom? No? I also missed the memo, because my wife informed me a couple weeks ago that it needs to happen and so just when I thought the decontruction of the house was coming to an end… the demo continues.

No Wallpaper for us

The home has half of the wallpaper removed and this point and I think that it the decision going forward in the renovation process. While removing the wallpaper a lot of what is hidden behind it is revealed. Wires, holes, cracks and mold are all things that I’ve found at this point. I don’t mean that as a bad thing. It shows that there are things that need fixing and it is much easier to do it with the layer that is covering it, removed.

New Home in Germany

New Home

First day

We are not moving in as there is a little bit of house work that we want to do before, but today is the start of our new Home. This will be a small series of some of the work we are doing, problems we face and future plans. Enjoy.

Prepping the walls for a new look

I spent the better part of the day in the kitchen removing tile and wallpaper. I have only learned now that most of it is scattered across the ground, that wallpaper or raufasertapete is common and popular in Germany, unlike the US. It is not necessarily a problem as the paper looked like it needed to at least be replaced, but I’m always tickled by after the fact learning. Now that I’m looking at the exposed wall/plaster and reading about the benefits of wallpaper vs just a paint layer I may have to consider putting up some wallpaper.
